Through hands-on opportunities to learn from the best in the industry, we ground tomorrow’s journalism leaders in time-honored values and skills, while preparing them to tell stories and reach audiences in innovative ways. We strive to engage people of many backgrounds because journalism is most effective when those who report the news reflect the diversity of people and communities they cover.

Our journalism internships and fellowship programs include:

Scripps Howard Fellowship Program

The Scripps Howard Fund offers a 12-month fellowship program in conjunction with the Scripps Washington Bureau/Newsy and The Texas Tribune. Starting in June, fellows will work at either Scripps Washington Bureau/Newsy or The Texas Tribune, focusing on developing expertise in one specialty, while being exposed to all the components of the newsroom. The fellows will come together on three occasions for sessions on career management, leadership/collaboration and the business of journalism/entrepreneurship.

Environmental Fellowship Program

The Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism offer $71,000 stipends to five journalism professionals for nine months of study at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Apply by March 1; fellowships begin in mid-August.

Journalism internships

Students with internship experiences are more likely to find employment upon graduation than those without, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. During the past decade, more than 500 students have honed their skills in newsrooms across the country, thanks to Scripps Howard internships.

Partner Schools

Through selected partner schools, we provide $3,000 internship stipends and $500 follow-up scholarships to more than 30 undergraduate journalism students. Our partner schools select the students who receive our stipends and scholarships. The students then find internship opportunities for a minimum of 10 weeks.

Statehouse News Bureau

We partner with the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University along with several Ohio news organizations to offer students public affairs reporting experience in the state’s capital. The semester-long program provides training and experience in Ohio Statehouse news coverage.

Up to six journalists are selected for 15-week paid fellowships during the fall and spring semesters. Participants do not need to be enrolled at Ohio University but must be enrolled in a journalism or communications program to receive course credit.
