“Payback: Tracking the Opioid Settlement Cash”

Excellence in Business/Financial Reporting

KFF Health News, 2024

Author(s): Aneri Pattani, Lydia Zuraw, Hannah Norman and Oona Tempest

This yearlong investigative series looked at the unprecedented distribution and utilization of billions of dollars in opioid crisis settlements received by states from healthcare companies. Often labeled as “blood money” because its origins are linked to overdose deaths, these funds are intended to address addiction and its aftermath, yet the potential for misuse is significant.

Through rigorous reporting and innovative storytelling, led by senior correspondent Aneri Pattani, KFF Health News uncovered instances where funds were diverted to cover budget shortfalls, purchase law enforcement tools and support ineffective prevention programs.

KFF Health News’ reporting used multimedia platforms to democratize information about opioid settlements, empowering local reporters and engaging national audiences through broadcasts, podcasts and social media.

The impact of the work done by Pattani and fellow reporters Lydia Zuraw, Hannah Norman and Oona Tempest is profound. One of the stories was cited when introducing the Opioid Settlement Accountability Act. State legislatures and policy experts also cited the reporting in improving transparency around settlement expenditures, leading to enhanced public reporting in several states.

Their work has also touched the lives of the families affected by the opioid crisis. One mother who lost her son and is now raising her granddaughter was finally able to meet with local officials to discuss a program for grandparents in the same situation. Officials agreed to meet with her after KFF Health News shared her story.

The reporters at KFF Health News have helped initiate transparency, accountability and informed decision-making surrounding one of the most significant public health issues of our time.
