On Assignment with Richard Engel: Ukraine’s Secret Resistance

Excellence in Visual Human-Interest Storytelling

MSNBC, 2024

Author(s): Staff

MSNBC’s Richard Engel shed light on the heroic efforts of ordinary civilians who became partisans to resist Russian occupation in Kherson.

The MSNBC team reported on Vlad, Nastya and Mykhailo, who risked their lives to spy on Russian forces and coordinate Ukrainian airstrikes. Vlad, grieving the loss of a friend and her family, escalated his involvement, resorting to direct action against Russian soldiers. Meanwhile, another resistance member, identified as “Sasha,” endured capture and interrogation, highlighting the dangers faced by those who challenged the occupation.

The team worked with animators who helped bring the subjects’ first-hand testimony to life. The story concluded after Ukrainian forces swept into Kherson in November 2022, regaining control.

Engel, his unit and the MSNBC staff faced extreme conditions to share the stories of those in Kherson. They faced relentless Russian bombardment, freezing temperatures and intermittent electricity all while trying to ensure production quality.
