Tim Ethridge, an award-winning sports journalist with deep ties to the Evansville, Indiana community, has been named editor of The E.W. Scripps Company’s Evansville Courier & Press, effective March 26, 2012.

“Tim brings a wide range of experiences and the ability to adapt to a changing environment to the top newsroom role,” said Mizell Stewart III, former editor of the Courier & Press and now VP/Content for the Scripps newspaper division. “He is a proven leader who embraces the changes in technology and constantly works to develop new ways to deliver content on multiple platforms. His affection for and unparalleled knowledge of Evansville will be an asset as we continue to serve that community.”

Ethridge, 52, is an Evansville native who started his journalism career as a copy clerk and obituary writer at the Evansville Courier in 1975. After attending Indiana State University-Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana), Ethridge worked as an education reporter and copy editor in Madisonville, Ky. before returning to Evansville in 1979.

After starting in news, Ethridge turned to sports, working his way from sports reporter to assistant sports editor at the Evansville Courier from 1979 to 1986. He then moved to the afternoon Evansville Press, where he led the sports department until 1998, when he moved to the Indianapolis News and Star.

While in Indianapolis, Ethridge worked as a copy editor and directed high school sports coverage. He was part of the planning and coverage teams for the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400, the NBA Finals and the NCAA Final Four Men’s Basketball Tournament.

He returned to Evansville in 2000 as sports editor of the merged Courier & Press. During his tenure, the newspaper’s sports section has won numerous honors from the Hoosier State Press Association and the Indiana Associated Press Managing Editors. Ethridge’s personal honors include recognition for columns, feature writing, breaking news coverage and headline writing.

Ethridge also has helped coordinate coverage efforts for Scripps newspapers and Web sites for the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami and the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

He and his wife, Shari, have three grown children.
