Scripps News wins national News Emmy Award

June 26, 2025 By Molly Miossi

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Scripps News, the national news group owned by The E.W. Scripps Company (NASDAQ: SSP), has won a national news Emmy Award. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the winners last night for the 46th awards.

Scripps News won in the outstanding video journalism category and received nominations in seven additional categories: outstanding investigative news coverage – short form; outstanding investigative news coverage – long form; outstanding light feature – long form; outstanding hard news feature – long form; outstanding recorded news program; outstanding news discussion and analysis; and outstanding science and technology coverage.

“This award, and the seven other nominations we received, are a testament to our team’s dedication to connecting viewers with the stories that matter,” said Matt Simon, vice president of Scripps News. “This recognition not only honors our past efforts but also motivates us to continue raising the bar with the journalism we provide to people across the country.”

National news Emmy Award
The April 2024 Scripps News documentary “In Real Life: A Hidden War” won the award in the outstanding video journalism category. The hourlong documentary used on-the-ground reporting and satellite imagery analysis of the West Bank, Israel, to show how a war in response to terror is turning into a renewed conflict over settlements.

The “In Real Life” documentary series aired for seven seasons on Scripps News. Episodes have since been acquired by the nonprofit news and documentary organization “Evident,” which also shared in these nominations:

  • “In Real Life: A Hidden War”: Nominated in the outstanding hard news feature – long form category
  • “In Real Life”: Nominated in the outstanding recorded news program category
  • “In Real Life: Independent America”: Nominated in the outstanding news discussion and analysis category

Additional Scripps News nominations include:

“In the Shadows with Jason Bellini: The Moses Videos”
Scripps News was nominated for a national News Emmy in the outstanding light feature – long form category for its special, “In the Shadows with Jason Bellini: The Moses Videos.” The debut episode of the series, which premiered last November, featured a soldier – call-sign “Moses” – who captures the Ukraine war through his own camera, offering a raw, unfiltered perspective on the sacrifices of a Ukrainian generation fighting for freedom and a window into the grim realities of the frontline.

“Darwin’s War”
Scripps News was nominated for a national News Emmy for outstanding science and technology coverage for its May 2024 documentary, “Darwin’s War.” Scripps News’ international correspondent Jason Bellini obtained rare access inside a Ukrainian first-person view (FPV) kamikaze drone unit, an evolution in Ukraine’s war against Russia. Bellini, who has been reporting in Ukraine since the start of the war, embedded himself on the frontlines with “Darwin,” an ace Ukrainian pilot of FPV drones, and his team.

“Maine Shooting: Missed Warnings”
The Scripps News team received a nomination in the outstanding investigative news coverage – short form category for “Maine Shooting: Missed Warnings,” an investigation into Maine gun laws. The reporting by Scripps News investigative correspondent Lori Jane Gliha and producer Brittany Freeman revealed how more than two dozen law enforcement officials had information about the shooter’s threats and access to firearms, but no one was able to remove his weapons before he took the lives of 18 people. The team spent months uncovering information about the shooter, a member of the Army Reserves.

“Missed Warnings”
Gliha and Freeman’s investigation into the mass shooting in Maine also earned them a nomination in the outstanding investigative news coverage – long form category. Watch the half-hour special coverage here.
