Scripps News receives two New York Press Club Journalism Awards

May 22, 2025 By Molly Miossi

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Scripps News, owned by The E.W. Scripps Company (NASDAQ: SSP), has received two New York Press Club Journalism Awards. The annual awards honor excellence in various categories by writers, reporters, editors, producers and photographers.

The competition is open to individuals and news organizations based or operating in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and to individuals working elsewhere on behalf of New York metro-area news organizations.

The 2025 New York Press Club Awards include:

“Haiti: Descent into Anarchy”
Scripps News won the award in the documentary-national category for its report, “Haiti: Descent into Anarchy.”  The Scripps News Reports half-hour special delivered a harrowing and deeply human portrayal of a nation in crisis. Through rare, on-the-ground reporting, international correspondent Jason Bellini captured the raw and unfiltered voices of Haitians grappling with the daily realities of anarchy, violence and despair.

Other members of the team who contributed to the report include producer Ingrid Arnesen and Scripps News Managing Editor Linda Pattillo.

Bellini and the Scripps News team will continue coverage in Haiti with a new special report airing in early June, “In the Shadows with Jason Bellini: Inside Haiti’s Collapse.”

Maine Shooting—Missed Warnings
Scripps News was honored in the continuing coverage-national category for its investigation “Maine Shooting – Missed Warnings.” The reporting by Scripps News investigative correspondent Lori Jane Gliha and producer Brittany Freeman revealed how more than two dozen law enforcement officials had information about the shooter’s threats and access to firearms, but no one was able to remove his weapons before he took the lives of 18 people. The team spent months uncovering information about the shooter, a member of the Army Reserves. The investigation was also honored with a 2025 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award, a 2025 IRE Award, a national news Emmy nomination and received an honorable mention for a Gracie Award from the Alliance for Women in Media.

This is the second year in a row that Scripps News won the New York Press Club Journalism Award in the continuing coverage category. In 2024, Scripps News was honored for its series, Ukraine’s Stolen Orphans.

“This award is a testament to our commitment to journalism – the story doesn’t stop when the headlines fade,” Pattillo said. “It reflects a newsroom that doggedly pursues the truth, holding onto stories until every angle is uncovered and every voice is heard.”

New York Press Club Journalism Award winners will be celebrated during an awards dinner, hosted by the New York Press Club, on June 2.
