NewsChannel 5 Offers Life-Saving Weather Radios

May 3, 2007

"On Your Side" television station NewsChannel 5 teamed up with HH Gregg to unveil its weather radio campaign, empowering Clevelanders with a new way to stay safe in times of severe weather.  From inside their own homes, people can receive and track critical weather information and warnings with the weather radios.  NewsChannel 5 partnered with the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and HH Gregg to make the radios available throughout Northeast Ohio at the reduced cost of $29.99.

"We already sold 4000 radios at HH Gregg in North Olmsted," states John Butte, NewsChannel 5's Vice-President and General Manager.  "When it comes to severe weather nothing is more important than safety, and this is another way we're truly on the side of our viewers."

The official NOAA weather radios are available now at all 7 local HH Gregg Stores:

1) Parma –  7200 Brookpark Rd. – Cleveland, OH  44129

2) North Olmsted –  4706 Great Northern Blvd – North Olmsted, OH 44070

3) Canton –  5509 Dressler Road, Canton, OH  44720

4) Chapel Hill –  1850 Buchholzer Rd – Akron, OH  44310

5) Mentor –  7307 Mentor Ave, Mentor, OH  44060

6) Randall –  4910 Northfield Road, North Randall, OH  44128

7) Fairlawn –  160 Rothrock Rd – Akron, OH  44321

Power of 5 Chief Meteorologist Mark Johnson stresses the importance of the weather radios.  "Last year, the Federal Government decreed that all public schools will have a NOAA weather radio installed by the end of 2008.  Legislators also encouraged all citizens to purchase one as well to be better prepared for severe weather."

Johnson also emphasizes how owners of the weather radios can localize the technology.  "These weather radios are programmable for specific counties.  That way, you are only receiving warnings when they are issued for the county of your choice."

NewsChannel 5's weather radio promotion will last through at least the end of August.
