Scripps October revenues increase 13 percent

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The E.W. Scripps Company’s consolidated revenues increased 13 percent in October to $135 million, compared to $119 million in October 1997.For comparative purposes, the company’s monthly revenue report excludes divested operations and includes acquired operations as if they had been purchased on Jan. 1, 1997.Newspaper advertising moved up 6.3 percent to $55.5 million. Local advertising revenues increased 6.9 percent to $22.7 million. Classified advertising increased 5.1 percent to $22.7 million. Total newspaper revenues were up 3.4 percent to $74.2 million.Broadcast television revenues increased 15 percent to $37.1 million, buoyed by political advertising. Political advertising revenues were $10.3 million compared to $1.2 million in October 1997. Advance advertising sales for November and December indicate a general weakness in broadcast revenues is continuing.Category television revenues increased 87 percent to $16.1 million. The number of subscribers at Home & Garden Television reached 46.6 million in October, up 1.5 million from the previous month, according to the Nielsen Homevideo Index. The number of Food Network subscribers reached 35.5 million in October, up 1 million from the previous month, according to the Nielsen index.The E.W. Scripps Company operates 20 daily newspapers; nine network-affiliated television stations; two TV networks, Home & Garden Television and the Food Network; a TV programmer, Cinetel Productions; independent Yellow Pages directories; and United Media, a worldwide syndicator and licensor of news features and comics.
