Beverly Barnum named director of research for Scripps newspapers

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Beverly A. Barnum has been named corporate director of research for The E.W. Scripps Company’s newspaper division.Barnum for 11 years was vice president for market research and promotion for the Corpus Christi (Texas) Caller-Times, a Scripps newspaper that was acquired in 1997 from Harte-Hanks Communications. The position she has been appointed to is newly created.In her new role, Barnum will be responsible for overseeing newspaper market and readership research for all of the Scripps newspapers. She also will help Scripps newspapers implement a new Readers First initiative.“Beverly has a wealth of research knowledge and ability that we’ve been anxious to share with all of our newspapers,” said Alan M. Horton, Scripps senior vice president for newspapers. “We anticipate that her expertise will be invaluable as we continue to find ways to better serve our readers and advertisers in an increasingly fragmented media marketplace.”Before joining the Caller-Times, from 1975 to 1988, Barnum was corporate director of research for Harte-Hanks at its offices in San Antonio, Texas. At the Caller-Times she has been responsible for the design, execution and promotion of all primary research. Her responsibilities also include the development and maintenance of database marketing information about all businesses and households within the Caller-Times circulation area.Barnum also works with the Caller-Times Newspaper-in-Education program, and special event marketing, such as coordinating the Spelling Bee. She is interim director of the Scripps Howard Texas Poll, based in Austin, and is a member of the editorial review board for the Newspaper Research Journal published at Ohio University.Barnum has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Maryland and a master’s of arts degree in journalism and communications from the University of Florida.She will continue to work and reside in Corpus Christi.The E.W.
