Scripps November revenues increase 9 percent

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The E.W. Scripps Company’s consolidated revenues increased 9 percent in November to $140 million, compared to $128 million in November 1997.For comparative purposes, the company’s monthly revenue report excludes divested operations and includes acquired operations as if they had been purchased on Jan. 1, 1997.Newspaper advertising moved up 5.1 percent to $63.6 million. Local advertising revenues increased 6.9 percent to $28.1 million. Classified advertising revenues were flat at $21.6 million. Total newspaper revenues were up 2.1 percent to $82.2 million.Broadcast television revenues decreased 3.8 percent to $31.8 million, despite a $2.2 million increase in political advertising. Advance advertising sales for December and January indicate a general weakness in broadcast revenues is continuing.Category television revenues increased 100 percent to $16 million. The number of subscribers at Home & Garden Television reached 47.6 million in November, up1 million from the previous month, according to the Nielsen Homevideo Index. The number of Food Network subscribers reached 36.2 million in November, up 700,000 from the previous month, according to the Nielsen index.The E.W.
