West Palm Beach - WPTV
WPTV’s Consumer Watchdog team in West Palm Beach, Florida, uncovered a sticky safety issue affecting drivers primarily in warm weather states. The dashboards on several makes of cars were melting, creating a glare on the windshield. Many car makers were not fixing the problem until getting pressure from the Consumer Watchdog. Car safety experts interviewed for the story argued that the level of danger created by the melting dashboards warranted a full recall by the automakers, but the carmakers claimed the problem to be isolated.
After digging through public records and tracking down numerous car owners with similar complaints, the Consumer Watchdog got auto manufacturers to address the concerns and fix the problems. For car owners who paid for the repairs out of their own pocket, some manufacturers issued immediate refunds. For others who were still waiting for repairs, the manufacturers established a schedule to begin replacing the melted dashboards.
