Arizona - KNXV
The Arizona State Hospital is Arizona's only state-funded mental health facility - a last resort for the severely mentally ill and the criminally insane. For more than a year, KNXV in Phoenix exposed a stunning legacy of abuse behind the walls of this public facility, where stringent budget cuts and gross mismanagement have led to patients' deaths, as well as dozens of physical and sexual assaults of both inmates and hospital staff. As a direct result of ABC15's investigation, federal auditors conducted a series of surprise audits and investigations and are now threatening to suspend millions of dollars in Medicare and Medicaid payments to the facility until these problems are resolved. ABC15's investigations into ASH have garnered critical acclaim, including two regional Murrow Awards for Best Investigative Reporting and Best Investigative News Series. The reports also earned two Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards for Best Investigative Reporting.
